Description

SXM Food Centre

The island of Sint Maarten is located in the hurricane and earthquake-prone area of the Caribbean's. Following Irma hurricane of 2017 and global shipping crisis due to 2019 global pandemic, the import nature of local economy showed its flaws in significant food shortages.

This farm and education centre design focuses on educating public about why and how to achieve food security by going back to growing food locally, while also promoting concepts of circular agriculture and economy. Project uses a simple material palette of reused corrugated metal sheets, now a construction waste following Irma, and timber, to promote its use in hurricane-resistant structures and possibly jump-start local lumber production to boost economy.
